Inaugural Ceremony

The inaugural ceremony of the film festival is a unique opportunity to meet and interact with the veterans of environment and wildlife lm industry, environmentalists, researchers, senior government officials and different environmental groups. The highlights of the inaugural ceremony include:
- Felicitation of CMS VATAVARAN Prithvi Ratna Awardee: one of the highest awards for outstanding contribution in the field of conservation, the coveted Prithvi Ratna Award was initiated in 2003 by CMS VATAVARAN. Endorsed by UNEP, the award has been conferred to eminent filmmakers like Mike Pandey, Naresh Bedi, Shekar Dattatri, Krishnendu Bose and Ashish Chandola. The Award carries a trophy, Citation and a Cash prize of INR 1,50,000.
- Session - The Reflection: Conversation with an eminent environmentalist/ conservationist on her/ his personal experiences, anecdotes and instances (in terms of changing landscapes, biodiversity loss, success stories etc while travelling throughout the globe, and what needs to be done for the future)

Film Screenings

The festival and forum programmes will be held in seven thematic lawns. Slots for film screenings will be of 90 min each. This time, instead of dedicating one hall for back-to-back lm screenings, the festival programmes offer a mix of experts' sessions, talks, deliberations, contemporary discourses and lm sessions in every lawn. The festival will re ect on a wide spectrum of approaches taken by filmmakers, environment enthusiasts, celebrities, youth, and government officials towards mainstreaming biodiversity. The diverse lm sessions will have:
- Nominated Indian and International films: the festival showcase national and international films selected by a nomination Jury from the lm entries received in this 7th competitive edition. Many of these films have won accolades and awards in several international lm festivals and will be premiered for the first time in India.
- Film screenings for children: children section will have series of lm screenings and interactive sessions focusing on menagerie of biodiversity issues.
- Best of biodiversity cinema: this special segment will take the audience on an eventful journey into the diverse geographical realms of our planet, through the lens of some of the nest natural history and conservation filmmakers of our time. There will be screening of award winning films from prominent international environment and wildlife film festivals from across the world. The presence of international filmmakers & festival directors in the interactions and discussions will further add to the fun of watching best of green films from different parts of the world.
Expert Talks and Sessions

Biodiversity conservation issues need larger public discourse and a bigger platform. this time festival and forum is going to reach out to make people informed, motivated and committed for mainstreaming biodiversity. 2013 CmS vAtAvARAN will organise several interesting talks and experts sessions with more than 70 conservationists, policy makers' and the concerned communities to make the concept of biological biodiversity diversity and its importance to our lives understandable. the thematic lawns will host 48 sessions on:
- Blue agenda: Blue agenda includes the challenges concerning "coastal and marine" issues, primarily due to their significance to humanity and the threat to the marine biodiversity. this sub-theme lawn will highlight various aspects related to coastal and marine area conservation such as mangrove forests for coastal protection, coral reefs bleaching, sea level rise due to climate change, natural disasters impact on biodiversity, global conflicts and cross boundaries issues, sustainable tourism, pollution, livelihoods issues (corporatisation of fisheries, aquaculture for local community development) etc.
- Forest biodiversity: Forest biodiversity refers to all forms of life found in forests, including trees, plants, animals, fungi and micro-organisms, and their roles in nature. the expert talks and sessions will highlight conservation and sustainable use of forest
biodiversity, illegal wildlife trade, mining, indigenous community rights, traditional knowledge, sustainable livelihoods, armed conflict, access benefit sharing, health, migration, displacements and rehabilitation communities and so on.
- Mountain biodiversity: mountains encompass spectacular landscapes, a wide variety of ecosystems, a great diversity of species, and distinctive human communities. the festival programme aims to highlight emerging challenges due to habitat degradation, avalanches, landslides, flooding, extinction of rare species, migration, climatic change adaptation and mitigation, mining, irresponsible tourism, industrial and agricultural pressure, re, infrastructure development and other related issues.
- Inland waters and wetlands biodiversity: inland waters are aquatic-inluenced environments located within land boundaries and can be fresh, saline or a mix of the two. It includes lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, groundwater, springs, cave waters, floodlains, as well as bogs, marshes and swamps. Wetlands are areas where the land is permanently or seasonally wet. Wetlands play a number of roles in water purification, flood control, shoreline stability and harbouring biological diversity. In this sub-theme lawn, CMS VATAVARAN will highlight the contemporary issues related to dams, lagoons, pollution, encroachment, water, interrelations between human societies and wetland, sustaining livelihoods, health.
- Bio-safety: Bio-safety includes safe handling, transport and use of living modified organisms (LMOs) resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on biological diversity and risks to human health. CMS VATAVARAN will bring to fore the discourse related to bio-safety including GMOs, GM crops (like Bt Brinjal, Bt Cotton), fair and equitable sharing of the benefits, green revolution, agro-biodiversity, indigenous economies, financing, farmer's livelihoods security and suicides and so on.
- CEPA: This year we are adding new section - Communication, Education and Public Awareness (CEPA) aims to share experiences and best practices concerning biodiversity communication
Music Festival

In addition to the exciting line up of the festival and forum programmes, this time delegates of CMS VATAVARAN are going to enjoy country's best musical troops/ bands and cultural performances during the festival. music festival, will be held over four days in front of a large audience at a prime and popular venue.
Open Stage

CMS VATAVARAN 2013 is offering for the first time an exciting opportunity to all talented and young artists (theatre, dance, music bands, singers, and musicians) to perform in the open arena on environment or wildlife conservation issues.
Organic Food Festival

the festival delegates will get an opportunity to taste the best and freshest organic food during the ve days of green festivity. The festival aspires to connect one to the most extraordinary organic food available in the country. the festival will serve lunch, snacks and local mouth-watering savouries.
Organic Green Haat

Organic green haat will augment ones shopping experience by offering one the range of Non timber Forest products (NTFPs) such as medicinal/ herbal plants, crafts, cosmetics etc. An exhibition cum sale of forest based products will be held at the festival venue

All the 2013 Indian and International entries will be available for viewing to the registered festival delegates which will be accessed country-wise, director-wise, alphabetically or through category or key-word search.
Award Nite

During the CMS VATAVARAN 2013 award nite, the best films in Indian and international category will be honoured. The award presentation will be followed by musical performance and dinner. The august gathering will comprise of bigwigs of the lm industry, eminent filmmakers, environmentalists, statesman, experts, national and international organisations, green innovators and media persons.
The festival's previous editions had eminent personalities like Shri Basu Chatterjee, Shri Shyam Benegal, Shri Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Shri Mahesh Bhatt, Shri Amol Palekar & Shri prakash Jha, eminent filmmakers; Smt Ambika Soni, Hon'ble Minister of Information and Broadcasting, GoI (then); Smt Shiela Dikshit, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi and Dr George Schaller, Vice President, Panthera and Senior Conservationist, Wildlife Conservation Society, USA for presenting the awards.
