CMS VATAVARAN 2006- 2nd Environment and Wildlife Travelling Film Festival

Press Release
Chandigarh, 25 August 2006

Chandigarh, Aug, 25, The three day environmental film festival, organized by Centre for Media Studies and Punjab State Council for Science and Technology ended here today. Though it ended but it triggered several questions in the minds of the audiences and unveiled varied issues related to country's environment and wildlife they were ignorant about.

For the school children who were present it wasn't just the films but the filmmakers as well that fascinated them a lot. The students were mesmerized after watching film 'Chasing butterflies'. The director Gurmeet Sapal shared the experience of his rendezvous with colourful and vibrant butterflies. Many other films like 'Birds Through My Window', 'Rainwater Harvesting', 'A Hunter's Tale', were all an eye opener for the students.

The audience was excited to see Langur's being recruited to manage the monkey menace. The director, Ajay Bedi who was especially present for the screening dwelt on the larger issue of encroachment of wildlife habitat by human beings. The film 'Experiment with Truth' about pollution and its effect on health bewildered the audience. The director Amish Srivastav posed the same question that has been asked in the film 'Are human beings treated as guinea pigs? He left the audience to draw a draw a conclusion on their own.

Nutan Manmohan's film 'The Second Hand Life' about the children working in hazardous conditions in e-waste recycling business jolted the audience to think twice before disposing electronic gadgets. The students and faculty members from Punjab University got an insight into the issue of dumping e-weste in India by western countries in the name of computer education for the poor. The director Suparna Chadda of 'When Atlas Shrugged Again' expressed her concern about the plight of the people of Kashmir affected by the earth quake in Oct. 2005.

To this end the festival, which has received unstinted support form MoEF, GoI ever since its inception in the year 2002, has been truly successful igniting an interest in environment and wildlife issues. Many went home pondering, discussing and pledging to protect the environment for a sustainable future for the coming generations.
