""/The Hyderabad metropolitan area falls within the ridge of two river basins: the Godavari and Krishna. The undulating topography of the area makes way for many lakes and water bodies, all of which are in a state of decline. Of the 500 lakes in the city, only 400 are left and the 169 water bodies are contaminated by discharges from local industries in Azamabad, Musheerabad, Sanathnagar, Kavadiguda, New Bhoiguda and Lalgudi. The river Musi that flows through the city has similarly become a dumping ground as only 60 per cent of the city is covered by the sewage system. And, the city’s two major reservoirs, the Osmansagar and the Himatsagar are unable to meet the city’s water needs of 325 million gallons of water per day. Air pollution in Hyderabad is high and of the 11 lakh vehicles only 57 per cent of them carry pollution under control certificates. And, noise levels have been found to be high in the Charminar, Punajgutta, Paradise and Abdis areas. It is urgent to find redress before the city’s woes turn irremediable
