Theme 2009: Sustainable Technologies
The theme of the fifth CMS VATAVARAN - Environment and Wildlife Competitive Film Festival is Sustainable Technologies. CMS believes technologies offer the means of radically improving methods of production, mobility, communication and exploration of natural resources for the benefit of humanity. But such a use also brings with it negative impacts on the environment and on the ultimate beneficiaries of such a technology - the people.

This is where the role of sustainable technologies comes in - the innovative use of technology can reduce environmental harm due to human activities including economic activity. Sustainable technology is all about a production and service delivery method which operates with the least burden on the environment. Sustainable technologies also point to the increasing 'service orientation' of producers (energy suppliers and builders, for instance), convergence and fusion of new consumer services, and to the notion of 'collective goods' as evidence of greater environmental efficiency. But the development and use of sustainable technologies will depend on the attitudes, incentives and capabilities of people and organisations.

Energy efficiency conserves natural resources, strengthens resilience to climate disruptions, and leads to substantial savings particularly with fossil fuel production peaking. Greater eco-conscious planning could create increased ridership in public transportation and consequently, save income and reduce commuting time of city dwellers. Cumulatively, these changes could improve livability in cities, and also attract a highly-skilled workforce.
