Focus 2009: Natural Heritage Conservation
|
Natural Heritage will be the focus of CMS VATAVARAN 2009 because of the alarming increase in the reckless misuse of natural resources that has affected the ecological balance. The rapid rise in deforestation, urban encroachment, natural disasters, inadequate management, under funding, pollution, global tourism, political discord, armed conflict, etc have made the heritage open to neglect, vandalism, and looting. There is an urgent need to protect it from neglect, wars, natural hazards and conflict of interest. CMS VATAVARAN 2009 seeks to focus on the protection and preservation of natural heritage from the point of view of threat that it face in today's world. The campaign will be for two years.
The Natural heritage is defined as area consists of terrestrial or aquatic site or features, including riverine, wetland, coastal or marine areas, along with their varied biota, processes and occurrences, that are essentially nature's creation and / or have ecological scientific, cultural, spiritual or aesthetic significance for the present and future generations, and deserve conservation action.
Typically, a natural heritage area or site is representative of an ecosystem type, or a unique ecosystem, or rich in species diversity, or critical to the provision of ecological services, or with exceptional aesthetic value, or manifesting strong eco-cultural links, or hosting interesting ecological occurrences.
Such a site could be pristine or near pristine wilderness area, regenerated area (with or without human intervention), or an area managed for scientific or conservation objectives. Typically, a natural heritage species is a wild species or a relative there of, or cultivated, or domesticated species (and only in exceptional cases an exotic species) that is threatened. Knowledge and practice related to the conservation, regeneration, and sustainable use of natural heritage sites, occurrences and species would also be considered a part of natural heritage, deserving conservation attention.
For the purpose of listing and documentation, priority should be given to such sites and species whose conservation has the support and involvement of local communities, except where any threatened outstanding eco-system or species needs urgent attention.
